How To Practice Speaking With New Dentures

Speaking with new dentures can be frustrating because you have to relearn how to do something you have known how to do since you were a small child. It is normal to take a few weeks or even a month before you are used to the sensations of biting, chewing, swallowing, and speaking with dentures, but do not give up! Try out these helpful tips on how to practice speaking with your new dentures.

Speak Slowly

You might hear clicking sounds while speaking when you first start wearing your new dentures. These noises indicate that your dentures are coming out of place or raising up too high when you talk. Speaking slowly will prevent your dentures from moving around and allow you to get used to the muscle movements involved with speaking. If the clicking sounds persist even when you speak slowly, this could be a sign that your dentures are not fitting properly, so you should come see us for a readjustment.

Talk To Someone You Trust

We understand that you might be embarrassed to speak to strangers or out in public while you are still getting used to your new dentures. Talking to someone you trust, like a close friend, your spouse, or a family member, is a great way to practice speaking with your dentures. These loved ones will not judge you or make you feel self-conscious while you learn the best techniques for speaking with your dentures.

Read Out Loud

It may seem strange, but reading out loud from a book, newspaper, magazine, or even a box of cereal is another great way to practice speaking with dentures. You can read out loud to yourself a few times a day, or read to your spouse or a friend when you see them. You could even join your grandchildren in story time and take turns reading aloud, which would benefit both of you!

Remember that even though learning to speak with your new dentures is frustrating now, you will get used to it, and it is worth it to have a beautifully restored smile. Contact our office to learn more.
