The only way to stop the damaging effects of missing teeth is to let us take care of the problem before it becomes more severe than just one missing tooth. At Salem Dental Arts we have several options for our patients who have lost teeth, including complete dentures.

Reasons for Missing Teeth

People have missing teeth for a variety of reasons, including poor oral hygiene habits, missing dental checkups, periodontal disease, receding gums, genetics, oral cancer, and other systemic diseases.

The worst thing you can do is leave an empty socket alone, especially when the missing teeth are the result of a condition such as periodontal disease. When bacteria produce plaque that sticks to your teeth, the accumulation will continue and eventually get under the gumline. The gums pull away from the teeth, and they will become loose and eventually fall out.

What are Complete Dentures?

Dentures are a device made of acrylic which holds prosthetic teeth that look and function like your natural teeth. The dentures are made to also look like natural gums. Our dentists use complete dentures when all the teeth in the lower or upper jaw are missing. Removable dentures allow the gums to take a break from wearing the appliance at night.

We will review your oral and overall health before deciding on a treatment plan. This is the time to discuss your wishes for your new smile. Our surgeon will go over all the information you need to make the best decision for you. If you have natural teeth that are damaged beyond repair, we will remove them before building your new dentures.

Getting Complete Dentures

After all remaining teeth are extracted, and following a healing period, we will make impressions of your mouth so our off-site lab can build the complete dentures. These devices are held in place by your gums through suctioning and require periodic adjustments as your bone mass diminishes with the aging process. If the dentures start to shift and move, you need to let us know, and we will adjust the device for a better fit. Moving dentures can irritate your gums.

Also, we also offer dentures that are supported by dental implants. This is a great option for patients who want a more stable tooth replacement solution.

Caring for Complete Dentures

Dentures require special care to avoid bacteria and growth. You should use a particular solution made especially for cleaning dentures and soak them overnight. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean the dentures. A baby toothbrush is ideal in caring for the dentures. Don't use toothpaste because it's abrasive and can damage the acrylic. Make sure you rinse the dentures thoroughly to avoid irritation from the cleaning solution.

When you come in for your consultation, we will review all the information you need about removable complete dentures including cost and financial options.
