Like many other items that are worn daily, dentures need to be replaced. At least, they do in some cases. There might be some instances in which dentures can be repaired instead of replaced. Keep in mind that gum tissue can recede, and the jawline can change as these are natural processes. Here are some things to keep in mind when your dentures don't fit as well as they used to.

Repair Or Replace?

When debating on whether to repair or replace your dentures, a good place to start is their age. If it is more than 10 years, you might want to go ahead and get a new set. Honestly, 10 years is a good life span for dentures and at this point you should at least get them checked.

The degree of damage is another factor in making your decision. A slight chip is one thing, but a tooth being completely broken off is much more noticeable. And if your dentures are broken or even shattered in several places, they might be beyond repair. If your dentures are damaged, the cause of the damage can be another contributing factor. If you dropped them a repair might be feasible, but if the damage is due to a poor fit, a repair won't fix the underlying problem.

Cost is a big factor in repair versus replacement. If the price is comparable for each option, ask yourself how happy you are with your dentures. The comfort and fit are of paramount importance, so if either feels off, you might want to opt for a replacement. If repair is an option, it is a small cost, and you are content with your dentures, this could be your better option. If the shape of your mouth has changed and your dentures now fit very loosely, or the damage is considerate, replacement is probably the best option for your oral health.
