When you no longer have natural teeth in your mouth, your jawbone will wear down over time and get reabsorbed into your body. Since traditional dentures are held in place by suction rather than being surgically implanted, they will stop fitting properly as your jaw changes shape. If this happens to you, you could benefit from a denture reline.

What Is A Denture Reline?

Relining a denture is a way of making your dentures fit more comfortably without having to refit you for an entirely new set. It involves using a putty-like material to reshape the base of your denture, the part that fits against your gums. There are two types of denture relines: soft and hard. A soft reline is made of a porous polymer material that adds a layer of cushioning to the edge of your denture. Soft relines typically only last one to two years before they have to be reapplied, but most patients prefer them over hard relines because they are more comfortable.

A hard denture reline is made out of a hard acrylic material, just like the actual denture base. Hard relines are durable and last much longer than soft relines, but some patients find them uncomfortable. Both hard and soft denture relines can be completed in our office or in a lab, depending on the state of your dentures.

How To Know If You Need A Denture Reline

If your dentures feel loose and uncomfortable or your gums are irritated, swollen, or sore, it is probably time for a denture reline. It is important to reline your denture because poorly fitting dentures can cause gum sores and infections like denture stomatitis. Plus, a proper fit will make eating and speaking more comfortable. If you think you could benefit from a denture reline, call our office today to set up an appointment.
