There Are Some Letters That Become More Difficult To Say With Dentures

Speech problems are common with a new set of dentures, but we are here to help you through that transition and become more confident than ever! Have patience with yourself and with a little work, you can overcome any difficulties and learn to speak clearly with dentures. Depending on the type of dentures you receive, you may notice that you have difficulty pronouncing certain letters, such as 'S' 'TH' or 'F'. Keep in mind, while these are the most common letters that are more difficult to pronounce, they are not the only sounds you may struggle to say correctly.

Overcome The 'Denture Lisp'

To overcome the 'denture lisp' we recommend several exercises that you can do in the privacy of your own home.

1) We suggest that you practice speaking slowly and focus on your speech by controlling your lips and tongue in a mindful way.

2) Singing is another way to exercise your face and mouth muscles and become more fluent in your speech with new dentures.

3) Find your favorite book and curl up in a cozy spot and spend some time reading aloud to yourself every day. Even spending an extra 30 minutes per day reading aloud can improve your speech dramatically.

Be Encouraged

Vocalizing our thoughts is one of our most prevalent forms of communication, and we understand that this time of adjustment can be frustrating. We want to encourage you to not give up, keep practicing and keep wearing your dentures.

If you are experiencing significant difficulty speaking, or your dentures are clicking or slipping to the point that you cannot speak, please do not hesitate to give our office a call. Salem Dental Arts in Salem, MA, will give you a full examination and make sure that your dentures are fitting properly and then assist you in learning how to speak again.
