Removable dentures generally consist of several replacement teeth attached to gum-colored bases. Usually, your dentist will create a partial denture as a replacement for a small row of missing teeth.

Removable partial dentures may have a metal framework or more natural-looking connectors, and sometimes, removable dentures can attach to your natural teeth in a more inconspicuous way with precision attachments.

Adjusting To Removable Dentures

When you first start wearing a removable denture, it may feel bulky and awkward. This is completely normal and a sensation that will dissipate. It will also take some practice to master inserting and removing it, and always avoid biting down to force a fit.

Our office will supply you with detailed instructions on how to care for your removable denture. You may also be instructed to wear your removable denture all the time in the beginning, to make it easier to pinpoint areas for adjustment. Eating will also take some practice, and avoid hard or sticky foods.

Proper Care For Removable Dentures

That being said, cleaning removable dentures is essentially the same as cleaning adhesive dentures. First, you want to choose a denture cleaner recommended by your dentist and with the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance. When cleaning removable dentures, stand or sit over a towel or a sink of water, so it has a soft place to land if you drop it.

Avoid using toothpaste, as it can be too abrasive, but brush your removable denture twice a day with a soft-bristled brush designed for cleaning dentures and some denture cleanser solution. Make sure to brush all surfaces gently, but thoroughly, to avoid damaging attachments. Finally, always rinse your removable denture well before putting it in your mouth.

Are you ready to see if a removable denture might be a dental solution for you? Or do you have questions regarding your partial denture, such as how it fits? Contact our office to learn more about how we can help you with these and any of your oral health concerns.
