Removable Partial Dentures
Missing teeth as an adult due to trauma or decay can be devastating, and in some instances, it even causes depression. Others judge you for the way your smile looks, and research suggests that people who have dental defects are often perceived as lacking education and not caring for their oral hygiene. You are our primary concern at Salem Dental Arts, and we want to do everything we can so that you can have a smile that you can be proud of and your oral health is of paramount importance to all our staff.
The Problem with Missing Teeth
Missing teeth are not only a cosmetic problem. Having a gap in your mouth can encourage bone loss and additional tooth loss as well. An empty socket will weaken surrounding teeth, and it can even cause them to shift, creating bite problems in the future. Moreover, missing one or more teeth can cause receding gums, and your oral health can deteriorate precipitously. We call this a domino effect because what starts as one missing tooth leads to other major oral health problems.
What are Dentures?
Dentures are one of the most popular choices for patients who are looking for missing tooth replacement. A denture is a removable dental device, usually made of acrylic, that matches the color of your gums and holds one or more porcelain prosthetic teeth that look and function like your natural teeth. We offer partial and full removable dentures, depending on your needs.
Why Choose Removable Partial Dentures
This option is ideal for patients who still have natural teeth, but have a few missing pieces. We will always choose to keep any remaining healthy teeth and will use partial dentures to fill the empty spaces in your gums. Partial dentures are held in place by metal clasps attached to natural teeth or dental implants.
When you come in for your first appointment, we will make an impression of the area with missing teeth, so our off-site lab can build your new dentures. You can expect to be refitted for your dentures as you age and more bone loss takes place. Also, if you lose new teeth or one of the anchor teeth, then we will have to adjust your appliance.
As the name indicates, these partial dentures are removable, and we will ask that you take them off at night while you sleep. You also need to wash them thoroughly using a very soft-bristled toothbrush. It is important not to use abrasive products to clean your partial dentures to avoid scratching the material.
Dentures are fragile and could easily break if you drop them. Using a soft towel on your sink while you handle them can help avoid this problem. Washing the partials with a denture-cleaning product will help to keep your device in good shape for a long time. You should not use toothpaste to clean your partials because the toothpaste is made with abrasive materials. Soak the dentures overnight and rinse them off in the morning to make sure the cleaning solution doesn’t irritate your mouth.
