Overdentures (Removable)

Diagram of an overdentureWhen an adult has missing teeth, it can cause a domino effect that will result in bone and more tooth loss. At Salem Dental Arts we offer you several teeth replacement options including overdentures.

It is essential to take care of any missing teeth as soon as possible to avoid any further damage to your oral health.

What Are Overdentures?

Overdentures are removable partial or complete dentures for patients with several or all their teeth missing. These replacements are usually held in place by implants, titanium rods that are inserted into the jawbone by our surgeons. These devices will help our patients with missing teeth improve their quality of life and regain ease with everyday activities such as chewing and speaking.

If you have poor-fitting dentures, you could be having problems chewing all your food thoroughly for proper nutrition and absorption of essential vitamins and minerals. With overdentures, your tooth replacement will be held in place with implants, which will prevent the denture from moving or becoming loose altogether. Overdentures also reduce or stop bone loss or resorption because the implants will fuse to the natural bone and the device will continue to stimulate bone growth in the previously empty socket.

Overdentures can prevent the "sagging" look that comes with missing teeth and aging. Moreover, this tooth replacement treatment is more comfortable because the dentures are held more securely by the implants.

Types of Overdentures

Our surgeons will design a customized plan to fit your needs depending on your specific situation. You will have three different overdentures options.

Implant Retained-Gum Supported: the overdenture goes directly over your gums secured with implants that are placed into either jawbone. In this case, the overdenture is removable and is secured into the implants with attachments that are part of the denture.

Bar Retained-Gum Supported: the implants include a metal bar or connector which is built directly onto the denture. The overdenture, which is removable, attaches to the connectors.

Fixed, Implant Supported: this treatment is the one that matches natural teeth more closely than other procedures. The overdentures are made in one piece, then the overdenture and bar are secured using screws to the implants. Our surgeon is the only one that can remove them.

Are You a Candidate for Overdentures?

The most important requirement when it comes to any kind of implant is that there is enough bone mass in your jaw to place the device. Some patients have thinning gums, or they suffer from bone resorption due to missing teeth. However, with modern technological advance, we can help patients who don’t meet this requirement. When you come in for your initial consultation, and before we start a treatment plan, we will evaluate your health history to determine which type of overdenture best fits your needs. Each patient is unique and will heal at his or her own pace. This is the time to ask questions about payment and financing options.
