A dental amalgam is a material used in filling and restoring teeth. Also known as a “silver-colored filling”, a dental amalgam is an affordable filling material and has been used in dentistry for over 100 years. It usually consists of a mixture of metals that may include silver, mercury, copper, and tin. Read on to find out more about dental amalgams.
How Dental Amalgams Are Used
After removing tooth decay and shaping the tooth to prepare it for the filling, prosthodontists mix together the dental amalgam. This consists of powder and has to be mixed with mercury to form a putty, which is then put into the patient's cavity. It then hardens into a filling.
Advantages of Dental Amalgams
The durability of dental amalgams makes them excellent for fillings. This is especially important for cavities in the back teeth which use a lot of force to chew food. It is also inexpensive compared to other fillings, making it a viable option for every budget. Additionally, since it hardens quickly, patients do not have to stay still for long periods of time.
Disadvantages of Dental Amalgams
Despite the many advantages, dental amalgams aren't all good – one major disadvantage is the obvious silver color. While this may be hidden in the back teeth, it is extremely obvious in front teeth. Amalgams also require more preparation than other types of fillings, including removing more of the tooth structure. Furthermore, patients may be allergic to the metals in dental amalgams or develop a sensitivity to the materials used.
However, to avoid the need for this altogether, you should make sure to brush your teeth and floss regularly. Good oral hygiene can prevent cavities and eliminate the need for fillings, dental amalgams or otherwise. At Salem Dental Arts, Dr. Pamela Maragliano and Dr. Maragliano recommend frequent dental visits to prevent any tooth decay.
