Understanding the Process of Getting Customized Dentures

Posted on 11/30/2019 by Salem Dental Arts
Understanding the Process of Getting Customized DenturesBefore getting fitted for a new pair of dentures, you will need to come into our office for a consultation. We will provide the best options available to you based on medical history, current medications, and some or your oral care preferences. Following this, we will fit you for your dentures.

The first step for denture fitting is to make a mold of your gums so that your new dentures will fit comfortably in your mouth while still fitting securely. Once we have the mold ready, we may ask some question about your preferences in color and size of teeth. From there, we will send your specifications to a lab where your dentures will be crafted.

It will also be necessary to necessary to discuss the option of implantation of the dentures or the use of adhesive to hold them. Implanted dentures are more of a permanent fixture in your mouth, however, they are more expensive than dentures placed with an adhesive. We can also discuss the costs associated with both.

Things to Expect When Getting Dentures

If you had teeth removed prior to getting dentures, you will need to wait anywhere from six to eight weeks for your gums to heal from surgery. We want to ensure that if you had teeth extracted that you recover fully as to not open wounds created while removing teeth.

Once you receive your dentures and they are ready to use, you may have trouble speaking. However, you will become accustomed to your new teeth, and speaking will become easier as you practice.

Finally, it is important to maintain your hygiene. This includes both the inside of your mouth and the denture themselves. We will explain the proper way to care for your dentures after receiving them. It is very important to maintain clean dentures as they can be harmful to your mouth if they are not.

Though you may only have dentures, it is still important to make regular visits to our offices for cleanings and consultation about gum and bone health. Please give us a call whether you are considering new customizable dentures or would like to hear more about the process.
